Poll shows Independent Voters Favor Pro-Life Issues
LOS ANGELES, CA, Zogby International Press Release
Just prior to the Republican National Convention, likely
Independent voters favor George W. Bush's pro-life over Al Gore's
pro-abortion position. In a poll conducted between July 6-8, 2000, the
non-partisan polling firm Zogby International surveyed 1,008 likely
Independent voters nationwide. The poll has a +/- 3.2% margin of error.
Key results are as follows:
-- 48.9% of Independents said they would support a candidate who would ban
partial birth abortions, compared to 41.2% who indicated support for a
candidate who would veto any attempt to ban partial birth abortions.
-- 54.5% of Independent voters oppose a woman's right to abort a fetus
based on the sex of the fetus, with only 23.9% supporting a candidate who
favors abortion for sex selection.
-- 67.6% of Independent voters would prefer a candidate who believes that
a physician should be legally required to notify the parents of an
underage girl who requests an abortion while only 28.3% indicated support
for a candidate who believes that physicians should not be legally
required to notify parents.
-- 50.6% of Independents favor a candidate who says he will not use an
abortion litmus test for picking candidates for the Supreme Court but
supports parental notification for minors seeking an abortion, and a ban
on third trimester and partial-birth abortions, while 32.6% indicated that
they would favor a candidate who would use an abortion litmus test for
choosing Supreme Court candidates, are opposed to parental notification
for minors, and opposed to a ban on third trimester and partial-birth
abortions.
"The Zogby poll shows an even wider margin of support for restrictions on
abortion among Catholic and Protestant Independent voters," stated Bradley
S. O'Leary, president of Associated Television News.
