 In this weekend's editorial we decry the tragedies that have taken the lives of so many modern martyrs around the world from the jungles of Africa, South and Central America, and Southeast Asia to the wombs of millions of would-be mothers. Adding to this abomination is the most recent verdict against Pro-Life advocates in which the Free Speech amendment and common sense were thrown out the window in favor of fear tactics that have labeled those who want to uphold the Sanctity of Life a threat to the culture of death antagonists. In her column this week, Sister Mary Lucy Astuto  continues with the second part of her clarification manifesto to right the wrongs perpetrated by the media regarding victim soul Audrey Santo from Worcester, Massachusetts. Sister negates media reports that the Bishop is negative toward the phenomena occuring there, in fact reassuring all that the prelate responsible is very open to believing.  Those words come from the Blessed Virgin Mary in her 381st Message to the Hidden Flower of the Immaculate Heart on July 29th, 1993 in which Our Lady urges all to live their faith to its fullest. She follows this up in Message 382 on July 31st with the plea to not be deceived by signs that come from the evil one, masked in spiritual signs and wonders that do not prompt one to reject vices and return to her Divine Son Jesus but rather feed the curiosity of those wanting to know more without amending their lives. This weekend's prayers are taken from the Opening Prayers for the Mass commemorating the martyr Saint Agatha and the Saturday Mass honoring Saint Paul Miki and his Companion martyrs:
Lord, let Your forgiveness be won for us by the pleading of Saint Agatha, who found favor with You by her chastity and by her courage in suffering death for the Gospel.
God our Father, source of strength for all Your saints, You led Paul Miki and his companions through the suffering of the cross to the joy of eternal life. May their prayers give us the courage to be loyal until death in professing our faith.
Events this weekend in Church History
 Sunday is the 121st anniversary of the death of Pope Pius IX, the Sovereign Pontiff best known for declaring the Dogma of the Immaculate Conception in 1854 and for proclaiming the Infallibility of the Bishop of Rome when he speaks from the Chair of Peter - ex cathedra on faith and morals. The sad point of his pontificate came in 1870 when the Papal States were dissolved and Rome became the capitol of Italy. The Holy Father confined himself to the lone remaining Papal State - the Vatican State, refusing to recognize publicly the inevitable change in politics. Leaders of Pro-Life Groups cry foul over foul stench emanating from favorable pro-abort decision in Portland
 The fallout from the shocking decision Tuesday of a federal jury in Portland awarding Planned Parenthood a phenomenal 107 million dollars in damages for merely trying to protect life has many Pro-Life advocates crying foul and seeing red - as in more blood that will be shed by the innocent unborn as the pro-abort's go unchecked in promoting the culture of death. Bishop urges caution for fear East Timorites will play into the trap being laid by Indonesia government - a logical suspect in shutting down the former's web domains
 While the majority of Catholics of East Timor favor independence, Nobel Peace Prize recipient Bishop Carlos Belo, head of the See of Dili, is looking at the overall picture and not the short solution. He urges all to realize that before there can be true peace and independence there has to be reconciliation and harmony with Indonesia because of his country's proximity to the mainly Muslim and larger land. At the same time the Indonesian government is thought to be the chief culprit in efforts to sabotage East Timor's web domains - the only way the country can express sovereignty even if it is "virtual sovereignty" For more, click on East Timor .
Notre Dame embroiled in pro-gay propaganda policy as Trustees struggles with moral issues
 It would seem the inmates are running the asylum if the administration caves to the demands of some 100 liberal students at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana. They are demanding anti-discrimination policies be passed that would protect gays and prevent the University from banning pro-gay progaganda or speakers on campus. Holy Cross Father Edward Malloy, head of Notre Dame, has strongly indicated he wants the referendum defeated for this is not a secular campus but rather a Catholic one and Catholic principles must take precedence. Mexico bishops clear up confusion in aftermath of Papal Visit
 Rather than trying to put out a fire, the former Mexican bishop of Papantla outlined why some officials were put off by the Holy Father's remarks because, basically, "the truth hurts." He exonerated the Pope's words and meaning, chiding the offenders with the fact that they need to take the Holy Father's words to heart and act in accordance with the Gospel. At the same time Cardinal Norberto Rivera, Archbishop of Mexico City approved his Archdiocese' release of a clarification of the Pope's remarks aboard Shepherd One enroute to Mexico City two weeks ago when the Holy Father spoke on the dangers of "Indian theology" which he termed an offshoot of Marxism. Sunday is the 121st anniversary of the death of Pope Pius IX, who, outside of Saint Peter, remains the Pope with the longest pontificate - 32 years. It was Pius who, in an unselfish effort to prevent the shedding of blood in Rome, agreed to surrender the papal states as the Holy See's temporal land holdings. The Papal States first originated in 754 when Pope Stephen II and the Holy See was given the temporal territories of the Duchy of Rome, the Exarchate of Ravenna and the Marches of Ancona by the king of the Franks, Pepin. The Papal States remained relatively intact until the time of the French Revolution. After centuries of governing these territories, the political landscape was changing drastically in the mid nineteenth century and Pius IX could see the handwriting on the wall when King Victor Emmanuel, in an effort to unite Italy, laid seige to Rome. Rather than more killings and ransacking, Pius surrendered the city and thereby gave up his right to govern Rome on September 20, 1870. After centuries of governing numerous territories under the Apostolic Signature of the Holy See, the many temporal land possessions were whittled to one - the 104-acre area called Vatican City which Emmanuel allowed the Church to retain. Emmanuel also agreed that the new Italian government would pay the Church three and one quarter million lire per annum; yet Pius refused this concession and, in protest, vowed to remain a voluntary "prisoner" in the Vatican. This agreement would not be recognized by the Popes until 1929 when a Treaty of Peace - called the Lateran Treaty - was signed by Pope Pius XI and the Italian Government officially granted the Vatican separate sovereignty.
