PROPER OF THE MASS (feb24pom.htm)
Double of the Second Class Feast of Saint Matthias, Apostle

Red Vestments

Missa "Mihi autem nimis"

St. Peter, in the Acts of the Apostles (Epistle), says that the prophet had Judas in view when he declares "That his episcopate would pass into other hands." It is the Lord Himself who showed the one He had chosen to be associated with the eleven apostles (Epistle).

It is to St. Matthias that He confided the secrets made known to Him in the bosom of His Father (Gospel). Wherefore this holy apostle shares the glory "of the princes whom God has established over souls": (Offertory) and "He shall judge the twelve tribes of Israel" (Communion). Since their infidelity, indeed, "Their house has become deserted" (Epistle) and the kingdom of Heaven is transferred to the Gentiles who do penance. His name figures in the Canon of the Mass. Let us ask "God, Who has included blessed Matthias in the college of the apostles, to grant us through his intercession" (Collect) that we may "atone for our sins" (Secret), so as to obtain "peace and pardon" (Postcommunion).

Every parish priest celebrates Mass for the people of his parish.

We want to thank the Friends of Our Lady of Fatima for expediting these resources of the Propers. Sources: Saint Andrew Daily Missal and the Marian Missal , 1945.

EPISTLE:   Acts of the Apostles 1. 15-26
Lectio Actuum Apostolorum.
        Deo Gratias.
Lesson from the Acts of the Apostles. In those days, Peter rising up in the midst of the brethren said (now the number of persons together was about hundred and twenty) : Men and brethren, the Scripture must needs be fulfilled which the Holy Ghost spoke before by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who was the leader of them that apprehended Jesus; who was numbered with us, and had obtained part of this ministry. And he indeed hath possessed a field of the reward of iniquity; and, being hanged, burst asunder in the midst; and all his bowels gushed out. And it became known to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the same field was called in their tongue Haceldama, that is to say, the field of blood. For it is written in the book of Psalms: Let their h habitation become desolate, and let there be none to dwell therein: and his bishopric let another take. Wherefore of these men, who have companied with us, all the time that the Lord Jesus came in and went out among us, beginning from the baptism of John until the day wherein He was taken up from us, one of there must be made a witness with us of His resurrection. And they appointed two; Joseph called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias. And praying they said: Thou Lord, who knows the hearts of all men, show whether of these two Thou hast chosen, to take the place of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas hath by transgression fallen, that he might go to his own place. And they gave them lots, and the lot fell upon Matthias, and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.
        Thanks be to God.

        R. And with thy spirit.
The continuation of the holy Gospel according to Matthew. R. Glory to Thee, O Lord

At that time, Jesus answered, and said: "I praise Thee, O Father, Lord of Heaven and earth, because Thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them to little ones. yea, Father: for so it hath seemed good in Thy sight. all things are delivered to Me by My Father; and no one knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither doth anyone know the Father, but the Son, and he to whom it shall please the Son to reveal Him. Come to Me, all you that labor, and are burdened; and I will refresh you. Take up My yoke upon you, and learn of Me, because I am meek, and humble of heart, and you shall find rest to your souls: for My yoke is sweet and My burden light."
        Praise be to Christ

        OFFERTORY:    Psalm 44: 17, 18
        Dominus vobiscum.
        R. Et cum spiritu tuo.

Constitues eos principes super omnem terram : memores erunt nominis tui, Dominie, in omni progenie et generatione.
        The Lord be with you.

May the prayer of Thy holy apostle Matthias, accompany the sacrifice which we offer to Thy name O Lord, and that through it we may be both purified and defended. Through our Lord Jesus Christ Thy Son. Who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, one God. Forever and ever. Amen.

O everlasting Shepherd; but through Thy blessed Apostles, wouldst keep it under Thy constant protection; that it may be governed by those same rulers, whom as vicars of Thy work, Thou didst set over it to be its pastors. And therefore with Angels and Archangesl, with Thrones and Dominations, and with all the hosts of the heavenly army, we sing the hymn of The glory, evermore saying:
        HOLY, HOLY, HOLY...
