5 Beatifications Scheduled for Sunday
Includes first Puerto Rican ever
VATICAN CITY, APR. 27, 2001 (Zenit.org).- John Paul II will beatify five men and women this Sunday, including the first Puerto Rican.
The five are Bishop Manuel González García (1877-1940), founder of the Congregation of the Eucharistic Missionaries of Nazareth.
Maria Anna Blondin (1809-1890), virgin, founder of the Congregation of Religious of St. Anne.
Catherine Volpicelli (1839-1894), virgin, founder of the Servants of the Sacred Heart
Catherine Cittadini (1801-1857), virgin, founder of the Ursuline Religious of Somasca; and
Carlos Manuel Cecilio Rodríguez Santiago (1918-1963), layman and first Puerto Rican to be beatified.
"In the new blessed, the Church recognizes and contemplates the work of the Holy Spirit, who modeled them after the risen Lord," a Vatican press statement said. "They obeyed God more than the world, and are an example of generous giving of themselves in service of brothers."
