The Holy Father resumes his ad limina visits with bishops in Rome
The great challenge for Christians in a godless society is the defense of human life from conception until natural death, John Paul II warned today. "The abortion statistics published over the last decades in your country are alarming." And, surprise, he's not talking about the United States but about Hungary as the Holy Father addressed the Hungarian bishops during their "ad limina" visit to Rome, the first such visits since November of 1999. "Do everything possible to encourage pregnant women to continue their pregnancy to full term," he strongly urged. The Pope conveyed his thoughts in his message to the Magyar Church, which embraces 6.5 million baptized Catholics among Hungary's 11 million people. Now that the nation's Communist persecution is over, the Holy Father observed, Hungary is living in a materialist society in which the life and dignity of man are in grave danger.

Last German Diocese to comply with Rome reaches agreement on counseling certificates for women seeking abortion
The last Roman Catholic Diocese of Germany has reached an agreement with the Vatican that will allow its pro-life program to continue offering
certificates of counseling to women who may then seek an abortion.
Bishop Franz Kamphausof Limburg said the compromise would allow him to
continue offering the certificates until the end of the year. They serve
as proof of counseling and must be obtained by women in Germany to legally
have an abortion. Limburg is the lone remaining diocese to resist. The German Bishops Conference, which decided in 1999 to comply with the Pope's request to stop issuing the certificates, said it welcomed
Kamphaus' agreement with the Vatican. Germany's other dioceses have
already ceased to issue the certificates, although many continue to offer

Cardinal sees hope for mainland China from new missionary spirit in Taiwan
The Catholic Church in Taiwan is committing
herself to be a bridge for the evangelization of mainland China,
highlighted this week Cardinal Jan Pieter Schotte, Secretary
general of the Synod of Bishops. In declarations to Fides during
his trip to Taiwan, Cardinal Schotte said that Church in the
island "welcomed the mandate issued by the Pope in 1984. It is
giving serious attention to his call to be a bridge between the
universal Church and the Church in mainland China, today a
martyr Church."

The Pope to whom we owe the Nicene Creed
On this date 1,687 years ago in 314 Pope Saint Sylvester I was elected the 33rd successor of Peter. It was this saintly Pontiff who convened the First Ecumenical Council at Nicea where the Nicene Creed was formulated. It was also Sylvester who established Sunday as the day of Sabbath, ergo a holyday in honor of the day Our Lord rose from the tomb on Easter Sunday. Since 1054 there has been a dispute on the day of Easter and recently Pope John Paul II has called for all Christian faiths to celebrate Easter on the same day.
