Urgent Message to All Catholics and Other Christians
IMMEDIATE ACTION
AB 1649 is scheduled to be heard in the California state Assembly Labor &
Employment Committee this Wednesday, April 25, 2001. Authored by lesbian
assemblywoman Jackie Goldberg, this bill would redefine sex to include a
third category of "gender" which is something other than sex at birth, like
transgender, transvestites, cross-dressers, drag queens, etc. It would
force employers to allow any individual to dress in a manner they see fit
or perceive their gender to be and force Catholic and Christian businessmen
to hire such individuals contrary to their deeply held religious beliefs.
The California Catholic Conference is tracking this bill as "significant"
in terms of priority but is not taking a position on it. According to the
Conference's website at www.cacatholic.org as of April 23, the position
code assigned to this bill is "n" indicating neither support nor
opposition. Consequently, the Conference has taken no action, such as
writing a letter or meeting with legislators, in relation to this bill.
Please contact the California Catholic Conference and ask that it take a
"Full Opposition" (FO) position on this bill. Request that the Conference,
as the political action and lobbying arm of the California Catholic
bishops, speak out forcefully and publicly against bills that seek to
legitimize radical sexual behaviors through the inclusion of "gender" in
public policies.
